Abergavenny Steam Rally      Sunday 24th and Monday 25th of May 2026

Stationary Engines

Our Stationary Engines Display features a collection of vintage engines that once powered workshops, farms, and factories before mains electricity became widespread. You’ll see a range of makes and sizes, from small single-cylinder engines to larger multi-horsepower units that drove sawmills, threshing machines, water pumps, and workshop machinery. Throughout the rally, many of these engines will be started and run, allowing visitors to see them in action and hear the distinctive sounds of hit-and-miss ignition and steady flywheel rotation. Owners will be on hand to explain how these engines worked, their various applications, and the restoration process. The display offers a glimpse into the ingenious mechanical solutions that kept industry and agriculture running in the pre-electric era.
